Conserving wildlife in the South West of WA
WA Wildlife – Busselton is our second wildlife rehabilitation facility, located in Broadwater, Busselton. Established in 2026, the facility is part of WA Wildlife’s long-term commitment to expanding wildlife care across regional Western Australia.
Building on the model of the WA Wildlife Hospital (and rehabilitation facilities) in Cockburn, our vision is to establish a dedicated wildlife rehabilitation centre that will support native wildlife across the South West for generations to come.
Establishing WA Wildlife – Busselton
WA Wildlife – Busselton was established in August 2026 through a partnership with local wildlife rescuers and the generous support of a private landowner who provided the property under a long-term, peppercorn lease.
The site includes approximately two acres of land, an existing large waterbird aviary and space for future expansion.
With the support of local businesses, community members and more than 50 volunteers, work commenced to prepare the property for wildlife rehabilitation, including improving enclosures, infrastructure and animal care facilities.
The facility officially commenced wildlife admissions in October 2026, marking an important milestone for wildlife conservation in the South West.
Our priorities for 2026–2027
Our initial priority is to establish a dedicated black swan rehabilitation program, supporting the estimated 300–400 swans and cygnets requiring assistance across the South West each year.
During 2026–2027, our focus will be on improving rehabilitation enclosures, installing essential infrastructure, developing our volunteer workforce and establishing safe, sustainable operations.
We will also strengthen the facility’s capacity to respond to wildlife emergencies, including preparing for the potential arrival of H5 bird flu in local bird populations.
Our vision for the future
Our long-term vision is to develop WA Wildlife – Busselton into a major wildlife rehabilitation centre, similar to our established facilities in Cockburn.
While black swans are our initial focus, we plan to progressively expand the facility to accommodate a wider range of native wildlife species, with additional rehabilitation enclosures, specialised facilities and dedicated staff.
As the facility grows, we aim to create a regional centre of excellence for wildlife rehabilitation, volunteer training and conservation, working alongside our Margaret River Wildlife Hospital to provide a more comprehensive network of wildlife care across the South West.
Our goal is simple: to ensure sick, injured and orphaned wildlife in the South West have access to the care they need, now and into the future.
Support WA Wildlife – Busselton
As a registered charity, we rely on the generosity of volunteers, local businesses, donors and sponsors to support our work.
We welcome community involvement, volunteering, financial contributions and in-kind support to help us continue developing the facility.
Together, we can build a lasting future for wildlife rehabilitation in the South West.
